Today, almost every person in our country has things from genuine leather such as shoes, bags, backpacks, briefcases, outerwear, etc.
Since the climate in most of Russia is quite harsh and changeable, and leather products are not cheap, it makes sense to carefully care for them and protect them from various precipitation (snow, rain) and moisture (puddles, dirt).
In this test, we will consider the most popular water-repellent agents (impregnations), sold in well-known retail chains, and affordable.
For the experiment, we chose the most “unprotected” natural leather for water - “crust” drum dyeing. With this type of dyeing, the skins are placed in a special drum, which rotates to ensure uniform penetration of the dye. Additionally, the surface of the skin is not processed or painted.
Mainly in production leather goods cover dyed leather is used. It is carried out additionally after drum dyeing, which allows you to give the coating any color, and also additionally protects the surface of the leather from various damages and chemical exposure.
For the test, we selected 11 types of water-repellent agents:
1) "Vito protector" -250 ml. - chain of construction stores "Vimos". Price: 181 rubles.
2) "KIWI Aquastop" -200 ml. - Auchan hypermarket chain. Price: 139 rubles.
3) Water repellent spray"Every day" - 250 ml. - "Auchan" hypermarket chain. Price: 80 rubles.
4) “Dividik” for shoes - 250 ml. - chain store household chemicals and home goods “Rainbow Smile”. Price: 184 rubles.
5) "Silver Premium" - 250 ml. - chain of stores of household chemicals and household goods "Rainbow Smile". Price: 224 rubles.
6) Universal impregnation “Water proof” - 230 ml. - chain of stores of household chemicals and household goods “Ulybka Radugi”. Price: 79 rubles.
7) "Salton Expert" - 250 ml. - Perekrestok supermarket chain. Price: 239 rubles.
8) "Salton Zashchita" - 300 ml. - supermarket chain "Perekrestok". Price: 154 rubles. 
9) "Salamander Universal SMS" - 300 ml. - Perekrestok supermarket chain. Price: 279 rubles.

12 square pieces of leather were cut. 
Eleven were treated with water-repellent agents according to the instructions and one was not treated with anything (serial number “0”). All of them were laid out on the table and numbered, as given above in the text. The samples were treated using a regular spray bottle with plain water. 
Number “0” got wet immediately. 
By the 10th minute, small specks of wet skin appeared at numbers “1”, “2”, “3” and “9”. Number “6” began to get wet, and “10” got wet all over. 
By 20 minutes:
“0” absorbed all the moisture and was almost dry.
“6” - absorbed and also began to dry.
“7” and “8” did not absorb moisture.
“1”, “4”, “5” - small rare spots appeared.
“11” - one small spot appeared.
“2” and “3” - small stains and wet edges.
“10” - moisture has permeated the entire surface of the sample. 
By 30 minutes:
“7” and “8” showed excellent results, i.e. they did not get wet at all.
“1”, “4” and “5” - good result - small spots.
“11” - rating “good with a minus”.
“2”, “3” and “9” - the results are satisfactory - quite large spots.
“6” and “10” - fell through - the entire surface got wet. 
Sample “0” (an untreated piece of leather) acted as a “moisture absorber” without resisting it at all.

One evening I was browsing the Internet, and an old news story about a miraculous nanocoating caught my eye: just cover any object with it and water will run away from this object in all directions. And my interest captured me: “What if they have already made commercial samples, but I don’t know?”
I quickly went through my two favorite Internet sites; a search on Aliexpress didn’t yield anything, but I did find a couple of options on Ebay. What came out of this - look further.
After reviewing the offered range, it became clear that there are three main types of hydrophobic sprays: for cars (window/body coating), for hard objects (metal, wood, stone) and for clothing. The last option interested me the most, since our rainy season lasts from April to October (with rare breaks in the sun), and winters recent years too warm, full of puddles and slush. An umbrella may help in fighting the rain, but it does not protect your feet in any way and your shoes are always wet. Especially with my craving for low-top sneakers: the fabric gets wet in an instant. Well, making waterproof, water-repellent boots without changing their appearance is very tempting, why not give it a try?
My choice was made by the manufacturer NanoProm; the product they offer, judging by the description, is ideal for my purposes. On the list possible options applications (free translation from English):
Just in case, I also checked with the seller whether this coating would work with denim and cotton fabric on my sneakers, to which I received an affirmative answer.
By this time, the toad finally gave up and I placed an order (late in the evening), and the next day the seller already sent the parcel and gave the track number. The parcel came from Slovakia. Of course, I understand that Slovakia and Belarus are separated by a relatively short distance, but I did not expect such fast mail service: on 10/01 the parcel was sent, and on 10/05 I already picked it up at the post office! Taking into account that the 3rd and 4th were weekends. Incredibly fast!

The packaging is a regular bag with pimples, with something like green foam stuffed inside. In addition to the cylinder, the package also contained instructions for use on English(the information is the same as on the lot description page).

Before starting the tests, let's look at the basic rules for preparing the surface and applying the spray.
The manufacturer states the following:
- Consumption 25-100 ml/m2, depending on the absorbency of the fabric. For a rough estimate, you can take a consumption of 10 ml/m2 for each millimeter of material thickness. To achieve best results, the surface must absorb nano-impregnation well.
- Coated fabric and shoes can be washed in washing machine.
- The duration of coverage varies greatly depending on the application. The surface will retain its properties for several washes. The durability of the processed material also plays a role important role! In general, the impregnation is maintained as long as the structure of the base material is maintained. Washing can damage the fibers, which can damage the surface finish.
And a brief overview of the instructions for applying the spray:
- The surface must be perfectly clean and degreased in order to bind the active substance directly to the surface of the material. Don't skip this step as it directly affects achieved effect and durability of protection! It is recommended to at least rinse the fabric/shoes in clean water and allow to dry completely.
- The binding of the nanosubstance to the treated surface must occur within 24 hours at temperatures of 3°C – 30°C, and the product should not be exposed to rain during this time. It is necessary to apply impregnation until the fabric is able to absorb it. The distance from the sprayer to the surface to be treated is 15-20 cm. After treatment, water resistance will appear after complete drying. Abrasion and chemical resistance will appear after 24 hours. It is recommended to check the effect after 24 hours.
Well, everything seems clear here, we can get down to business. I want to check it out quickly, so I don’t have time to wash my shoes, especially since I already have to wait 24 hours. Yes, I know that by doing this I immediately violate the first point of the application rules. So let's check what we have. The first to come across were denim sneakers.
I covered one shoe with miracle spray, and left the other as is. After 24 hours of waiting, I conducted an experiment, which you can see in the video:
As you can see, water is repelled from one shoe, and the second gradually gets wet. Well, it seems to be working! Afterwards I tried to wet the protected sneaker several more times - and nothing came of it.

I also didn’t do any preliminary cleaning, but nevertheless the water runs away in different directions (although without protection they instantly become wet). Inspired by the successful results of the experiments, I decided to apply a hydrophobic coating to suede boots, this is what the application process looks like:
As for application: not all surfaces absorb quickly, so you need to apply slowly and gradually, otherwise most of the valuable liquid will simply drain onto the floor. For 3 pairs of shoes it took me about a quarter of the cylinder, that is, the consumption is quite large (compared to what is stated by the manufacturer). But I think it’s worth it, the laboratory tests went well. I think that water from puddles will not linger on the shoes either.
As for durability: it is not yet possible to check how this coating behaves during long-term use, but in a month or two I think I will be able to supplement the review with such information.

Caring for shoes in the off-season and in winter differs significantly from “summer”: dirt, slush, puddles, sleet, salt and sand that are sprinkled on the paths do not benefit new shoes or boots. Don’t rush to get upset - so-called impregnations will come to the rescue.

How to choose and apply impregnation to shoes
First, pay attention to the purpose. For example, water-repellent impregnation for shoes that contains fats is absolutely not suitable for suede, and, on the contrary, it nourishes natural leather well. If you wear boots from different materials, then buy a universal composition.

1. Using a sponge/brush, thoroughly clean your shoes from dry dirt and dust.
2. Wipe with a damp cloth or wash with warm soapy water (for textile variations).
3. Comb the suede with a special brush, carefully lifting the pile. If there are greasy, shiny places, use a steam generator.
4. Dry naturally. As an option, fill your boots or sneakers with paper/newspaper: excess moisture will be absorbed into the filler.
5. When applying impregnation, follow the instructions on the package. Spread the thick mixture with a soft sponge and rub with a velvet cloth or woolen rag. Spray the spray in a thin, even layer from a distance of at least 10-15 cm.
For uniform application, keep the can at a distance of 10-15 cm from your shoes You need to treat your shoes not before leaving the house, but in advance. The best option is for the night. For the product to saturate the material well, it takes at least 6-8 hours.
6. If you are dealing with vulnerable materials (thin leather, suede, nubuck), secure the result - repeat the procedure.

Homemade shoe impregnation recipes
For skin, use regular Vaseline. It protects the surface well from dirt and water. Apply a thin layer with a sponge, rub in, allow to be completely absorbed.
If you have nothing on hand other than a wax or paraffin candle, that will do. Rub your shoes, blow them with a hairdryer (maximum temperature). The mass will melt and cover the surface with a thin film.
A piece of paraffin wax and a hairdryer will make your boots waterproof. Be careful: this method is not suitable for thin leather products. Hot air causes it to deform.
Melt candle wax in a water bath, add linseed oil (ratio 3:1, respectively). Stir until the mixture becomes homogeneous. Apply the cooled but not frozen (!) mixture using a velvet cloth or woolen rag. Polish thoroughly.
A mixture of wax, drying oil and turpentine (in a ratio of 2:1:1) gives a good effect. Melt the wax and, continuously stirring the mass, add the remaining ingredients. Use warm impregnation.
Melt 50 grams of lard (preferably lamb), add to it the same amount of linseed oil and 10 ml of turpentine. Take a little product onto a woolen cloth and polish your shoes until they shine.
Please note that mixtures containing wax or oils are not suitable for “capricious” suede and nubuck! In this case, use only factory-made shoe “cosmetics”.
