Nowadays, fountain pens are not as popular as they were two centuries ago; they are rarely used in daily work. Nowadays a fountain pen is an indicator of the status and style of its successful owner; it emphasizes individuality and taste. Often such pens become collectibles, for example, and can lie idle for a long time. But instructions on how to refill a fountain pen will be useful to anyone.

Methods for refilling a fountain pen

There are two types and methods of refilling a fountain pen: converter or cartridges. Typically, the company, cartridges and converters are produced by the same company as fountain pens, but there are also universal models. The advantage of a converter over a cartridge is its reusability - you buy one converter and use it an infinite number of times. Cartridges, in turn, are easier to use and do not require much effort and time to replace.

Fountain pen with piston converter

  1. Before refueling, you must remove the protective cap of the pen and unscrew the barrel, opening the converter container.
  2. The pen must be immersed in ink, and then begin to rotate the converter piston clockwise. Under pressure, ink will begin to flow into it.
  3. After the container is completely filled, you need to drain a few drops by turning the piston counterclockwise.
  4. The final step is to turn the plunger fully clockwise, screw the barrel on, and wipe the nib with a soft cloth.

Fountain pen with replaceable cartridge

The replacement cartridge is a convenient alternative to a piston converter, great for on-the-go use. Before refilling the cartridge, it must be disassembled, and the packaging must be removed from the cartridge itself and the working side inserted into the hole located on the base of the pen body. Then press lightly until you hear a characteristic click and assemble the handle.

And remember, in order for your fountain pen to last a long time, you need to carefully monitor and care for it: clean the pen and change the ink in a timely manner.

Despite the fact that ballpoint and gel pens are increasingly used in everyday life, true connoisseurs of writing instruments prefer to work with fountain pens so that they can write in beautiful handwriting. Parker ink pens are especially popular, as the company’s stationery is an attribute of prestige. To truly enjoy working with such writing instruments, you need to know not only how to fill a fountain pen with ink, but also how to insert and use it correctly. You will learn about all this from this article.

Types of pen cartridges

Let's look at the description of the cartridge to make it easier for you to pick it up in the store stationery. The cartridge is a plastic cylinder with straight or rounded walls. At the manufacturer's factory, the reservoir is filled with fountain pen ink.

Important! Cartridges are also available with special ink for calligraphy, but such capsules are not recommended for use with pen writing instruments.

The main differences between all cartridges (except for color, of course) are:

  1. Physical dimensions.
  2. Working flange shape. On one side the capsule has a blind end, and on the other there is a flange that fits onto the handle feeder needle or is simply inserted into the handle. Inside the flange there is a simple device that locks the ink inside the capsule. There are two types of constipation:
    • Thin membrane.
    • A small ball made of plastic (sometimes metal). After the ink gets inside the barrel, the ball moves freely inside the capsule and mixes the ink, preventing it from sticking to the walls.

Important! Many stationery manufacturers make money not only from selling fountain pens, but also from selling cartridges for them. Therefore, some companies develop writing accessories for their own cartridge standards.

The most common cartridge standards:

  • International. This name is unofficial, since many manufacturers from Europe, America, China and India produce pens specifically for this standard.

Important! The most popular short capsules are “International”; these are the ones you can most often buy at an office supply store.

  • Parker. Cartridges of this standard are available in two types - short and regular. The “Parker” standard is used in Lamy pens, but only in the short type, since the shape of the back of some pen models does not allow the use of regular capsules.
  • Schaeffer standard. Although many Sheffer pens can also use International standard (short) cartridges.
  • The American company Cross has its own cartridge standard. The stepped shape of the working flange successfully counters all attempts to use capsules from other manufacturers in Cross handles.
  • Cartridges from the Japanese company Pilot are distinguished by their corporate standard. In addition, the company produces special shortened cartridges for mini-pens of its own production.
  • The Platinum company (Japan) is also distinguished by its standard. In addition, only the cartridges of this company use metal balls, which, when the tank is empty, begin to knock and notify the owner of the need to quickly replace the capsule.

Important! In addition to the above, at least a couple of types of cartridges from different companies are known, which are designed specifically for their own fountain pens, these are Sailor and Waterman.

Important! To rinse the pen, use distilled or filtered water at room temperature. After rinsing, pat dry the pen with a paper towel.

  • If your pen uses a cartridge, you must remove it before washing the pen. In this case, place the base of the pen in a glass of clean water for 30-60 minutes (depending on the contamination). The water level must cover the feather. After the washing procedure, blot the pen dry with a paper towel. If necessary, you can soak the pen overnight.

Important! Never use hot water, solvents and alcohol-containing solutions for cleaning the pen, as this can harm its quality. Also, do not use tap water, as it may contain metal particles that may clog the pen nozzles.

  • Rinse your pen every two weeks or when changing ink colors.

If we talk about how to properly use a Parker fountain pen or other ink pen model, then experts and manufacturers recommend the following:

  • Do not press hard when writing to avoid damaging the pen. A quality pen should glide across the paper easily.
  • It is not recommended to use ink that is a year old. Use only fresh product. If the ink has not been used for a while and there is no residue, stir it first and make sure there are no clumps or sediment at the bottom of the bottle, then use.
  • Do not allow the black ink to dry inside the pen as this may cause permanent damage. Black ink contains gum arabic, which has adhesive properties. If such filler dries inside the tip, the damage will be irreversible.
  • If you don't plan to use your writing accessory for more than a couple of days, wash the nib to prevent the ink from drying out.
  • Keep ink away from sun rays to avoid drying out and fading.
  • Do not use chemically treated paper that has a glossy surface for writing. This paper does not absorb ink.
  • If you are traveling by plane, do not fill the converter completely; it is better to leave it empty to reduce the risk of ink leakage. When the plane takes off, hold the pen vertically. If you decide to use your fountain pen during a flight, hold the pen upright when opening it and slowly remove the protective cap.

Content

Today you can find many stylish and status gifts, which are also convenient things in everyday life. One of them is the Parker automatic fountain pen with ink cartridge. The first pen of this type, which looked like a quill pen, appeared around 600 AD. in Seville (Spain). The metal version was patented at the beginning of the century before last. Gradually, the use of goose feathers decreased significantly due to the improvement in the quality of steel analogues.

What is a fountain pen

A pen-feather, first of all, is a stylish accessory with which you can emphasize your image successful person. High-quality products from well-known brands are expensive, and not everyone can afford to buy them. The products consist of a body, a pen and an ink capsule. The bodies of the first fountain pens were made of ebonite, after which celluloid became widespread. Body parts of modern products are made of plastic, brass, stainless steel

How it works

Pens with automatic ink supply have become very popular. Unlike ball ones, they should not be pressed hard. The writing unit of modern products consists of a feeder-pen block, a reservoir and a body with a cap. The speed of ink flow is regulated by the width of the channel, or more correctly, its cross-sectional area. The ink goes into the bottom of the channel and is fed to the metal tip. The pressure difference is compensated by the air entering the ink container - for this there is a special hole in the pen.

How to use

Before purchasing, the question arises: is it comfortable to write with a fountain pen? Out of habit, it may seem like no, but if you understand how to hold such a device correctly, then you will no longer have any difficulties with writing: whether it is a non-refillable or reusable product, you will not need to put much pressure on it. This pen glides across the paper with ease, allowing you to write without interruption for much longer.

Using a fountain pen is very simple - the peculiarity is that the ink is supplied to the tip using the capillary principle. The pen type can be open, semi-closed, closed, or disposable plastic. A certain amount of ink is transferred to its tip, the excess of which goes back. Feather pens require special care because... They must be washed with water and refilled as the ink is consumed. Manufacturers offer special replaceable cartridges for convenient refilling.

How to choose a fountain pen

First, pay attention to the design, shape and color scheme. These parameters do not affect the letter, but are of no small importance for the owner. Choose a pen that will look attractive and fit comfortably in your hand. If the size of the product is too small or large, this will lead to rapid hand fatigue. Other recommendations:

  • Features of the pen. This metal tip has a big impact on how you write. It’s up to you to decide what it will be: rigid or flexible, chiseled or straight, narrow or wide.
  • Tip size. The main types include “M”, “B”, “F” - medium, wide and thin. The preferred option is generally the latter size.
  • Type of filling mechanism. Many modern fountain pens use ink cartridges, which are replaced with new ones after use. They are convenient and simple.

Despite the fact that modern fountain pens most often come with comfortable pens, there are still fans of traditional converters, and there are many of them. Many people even specifically buy vintage models so that they can select the ink to their liking and mix different colors. A converter is the easiest way to try hundreds of shades that can easily be found in bottles. Cartridges are forced to be refilled.

How to use a fountain pen refill converter

A converter is a device that is inserted into the pen body in the same way as a cartridge. There are several types of converters: classic piston converters (the most common today) and vintage pipette converters. There are also push-button ones, but they are also quite rare. The principle of their operation is slightly different.

Piston rotary converters

A simple and reliable option that many manufacturers choose today. It is enough to unscrew the body of the pen (the back part is called the barrel, the front part with the nib is the grip section or grip section), place the converter in the pen and set the piston in motion: the ink will be drawn in, obeying the force of the vacuum.

Step 1. Insert the converter into the pen if not already done. Pay attention to whether there is a thread on the converter; if there is, it must be screwed in, not inserted. This happens on some pens (for example Cross).

Step 2. Dip the pen and some of the grip section into the ink bottle. Make sure that the entire pen is immersed, up to the grip section, otherwise the mechanism may not work.

Step 3. Turn the converter handle to lower the piston and release the air. You should see air bubbles coming out of the pen.

Step 4. Turn the converter handle in the opposite direction to raise the plunger and draw ink inside. If there is air left inside, don't worry, it's normal.

Step 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the converter is completely filled with ink and no more air bubbles come out.

Step 6. Use paper towel or a lint-free cloth to clean the pickup section and nib of any excess ink that has not drained back into the bottle.

Step 7. Assemble the handle by screwing the barrel, now you can use it.

Do not forget that before refilling a fountain pen with ink, it must be thoroughly rinsed with running water (or better yet, soaked for a couple of hours) and dried. It is especially important to do this if the tool has not been used for a long time and the ink has dried out, or if you are using a new ink color.

If the ink has dried in the converter, do not rush to turn it, soak it first - then you can turn it.

Piston converters with rod

The same as the previous point, only you do not need to twist, but move the piston through the rod along the converter body. Simpler and usually cheaper design.

The sequence of actions and precautions are similar.

Pipette converters

The principle of its operation is simple: the tool collects ink thanks to the compression of air, the release of which creates a vacuum that draws the ink into the pen.

Built-in piston system

If the pen has a piston filler (usually expensive pens), then proceed as follows:

  1. Disassemble the pen body.
  2. Turn the ink piston located inside the housing counterclockwise.
  3. Dip the pen completely into the ink bottle.
  4. Turn the clamp all the way in the opposite direction.
  5. Unscrew the clamp slightly (until the first drop appears) to remove air from the container.
  6. Remove the pen from the bottle and wipe it with a cloth.
  7. Reassemble the handle in reverse order.

Cartridges

The replacement cartridge is inserted into the writing accessory very simply:

  1. Remove the barrel.
  2. Remove the used cartridge.
  3. Insert the new capsule until it clicks.
  4. Screw all parts of the pen back.
  5. Wait until the ink reaches the pen through the feeder, gently shake the pen if necessary (splashes may occur).
  • Before refilling, it is always better to soak the pen for a couple of hours in cold water (it contains less impurities and salts).
  • You can soak all the pens at once in one container.
  • The cartridge can be easily refilled from a can of ink with a syringe, but it is also better to wash it of old ink.
  • Look at the handles.
  • Dry the pen before refilling.
  • Don't refill a lot of ink; if you don't write much in the coming weeks, it will most likely dry out.
  • In addition to the described refill option, you can refill the ink directly into the converter or cartridge, for example, with a syringe and then insert it into the pen.

For many Parker owners, refilling the pen has become a ritual. True “gourmets” of this action will never switch to using ballpoint pen. To use ink, which is sold in special bottles, the design of the pen provides for the presence of a reservoir.

Refueling systems

The filling mechanisms are called convectors. They come in two types: standard piston and with a rotary mechanism. This difference concerns the way the piston moves inside the reservoir. The meaning of refueling is always the same. The empty reservoir needs to be filled with new ink.

They emerge gradually during the course of writing. The time between refills depends on how much you use the pen. There is no air flowing inside the tank. Therefore, if the cap is closed, the ink inside will never dry out. A refilled pen is always ready to write, even if it has been in the case for a long time.

The sequence of action is very simple:

  • unscrew the housing sleeve;
  • lower the pen with the pen down;
  • turn the mechanism so that the piston moves down;
  • release all the air from the reservoir by pushing the piston all the way;
  • dip the pen into the ink container;
  • turn the mechanism in the opposite direction;
  • push the piston to the maximum until it stops;
  • remove the pen from the ink tank.

Do not add filler to the ink. Make sure that the pen is completely submerged in the inkwell. This will prevent air from entering the filling system.

When the pen is removed, be sure to drain a few drops of ink. To do this, lower the pen down again and turn the mechanism so that the piston moves a little inside the reservoir. This way you will squeeze out a few drops. When you see ink dripping into the bottle, return the plunger to its place. Just screw it in all the way.

Very little air will enter the reservoir. This is necessary to create an air cushion inside it. It will hold the ink and will not allow it to flow out spontaneously.

Parker refill with slide piston

The filling principle is the same. The difference is that the piston is not screwed into the filler reservoir, but is pushed into it by direct pressure.

Both filling systems are equally reliable. After the pen is refilled, you need to thoroughly clean the nib. For this purpose, special porous paper is used. It instantly absorbs ink, and no trace remains on the surface of the pen.

It is the need to clean the pen that scares some users. They are simply afraid of getting dirty. For them, the manufacturer offers a completely different filling system, which uses sealed capsules.

Capsule refill

A special capsule is inserted inside the body. This leaves no chance of getting your fingers dirty. After screwing the housing, the capsule is depressurized. This begins the supply of fresh ink. Each capsule has a reserve tank. To use it, just press a small lever. A spare amount of ink will be supplied to the pen. You will be able to write about a page of handwritten text.
